ABOUT DANDELI
In the year 1930, Dandeli was a small community with just 515 residents, primarily relying on the government’s sawmill and forestry operations for their livelihoods. Among this diverse population were the Konkanis, Devali, Marathas, Kuruba, Lambani, African, and Muslim communities, creating a vibrant tapestry of cultures. Nestled along the banks of the Kali River, this settlement underwent a significant transformation when various industrial ventures like The Indian Plywood Manufacturing Company, Lalbhai Ferro-manganese Factory, West Coast Paper Mill, Indian Saw Mill, and several small industries were established in the vicinity of Dandeli. Additionally, the Karnataka Power Corporation constructed power-generating dams across the Kali River. This evolution earned the town the moniker “Old-Dandeli.”
Before 1936, education had not yet reached this modest town. It wasn’t until the collaborative efforts of individuals like Shivaji Narvekar, Pundalik Pai, Sadanand Gopal Nadkarni, Balappa Chavan, and Bapshet that a basic one-room school emerged atop a nearby hill, which is now the location of the government Urdu school. Ramachandra Ganapat Nayak, originally from Sanikatta near Gokarn, took charge of this fledgling institution. With a humble inaugural class of 18 students, three of whom were older than their teacher R.G. Nayak, the school received recognition from the British government in 1939.
Dandeli’s name is intertwined with captivating stories from local folklore. One story tells of Dandelappa, a loyal servant to the Mirashi landlords who met an unfortunate fate due to his unwavering devotion. In a parallel legend, the city got its name from King Dandakanayaka’s wanderings through the woodlands, and the land was christened Dandakaranya in his honor.
Located at coordinates 15°14′51.7884′′N 74°37′46.8408′′W, Dandeli sits at an average elevation of 473 meters (1,552 feet). Abundant rainfall graces the region from August to November, creating a natural symphony embraced by the land. With lush forests and gentle terrain, Dandeli enjoys a tropical highland climate, where summer temperatures average around 27 °C (81 °F), and winters offer the comfort of approximately 18 °C (64 °F).
